Mayor of London, Boris Johnson

Happy New Year from the Mayor of London

Hi folks, I hope you’re all having a fabulous festive break. It’s just a couple of days now until the New Year, so it’s time to think about your plans for the big night – if you’ve not done so already.

If you’re planning on going to London’s famous fireworks display on the river don’t forget to bring your tickets. If you haven’t got a ticket, please don’t come down to the event as there won’t be any available on the night. The good news is you can still get involved in the event by joining Unicef’s New Year’s Resolution for Children.

This year, for the first time ever, Unicef is bringing together revellers at two of the world’s most famous New Year’s Eve celebrations – London’s fireworks and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay – for a moment of unity. The aim is to help children whose lives have been turned upside down by conflict in Syria.

Across both cities major landmarks will be lighting up blue in support of Unicef’s resolution for children - including London’s Shard, Coca-Cola London Eye, National Theatre and BT Tower, and Edinburgh’s National Gallery and famous castle. Both cities will also host a minute of blue fireworks for what’s being called #HappyBlueYear.

Whether you’re there, or watching on TV, if you give £3 (or more) to Unicef’s New Year’s Resolution by texting MOUTH to 70444 the UK Government will double your donation. And you can also show your support by downloading the Happy Blue Year app from the Google Play store and the iTunes app store.

Once you have the app simply hold the phone up to your mouth, press play and let the phone sing along to the song while you dance to the beat. Just get a friend to film you, or film yourself and share your singalong on social media using #HappyBlueYear.

There are of course many other great ways you can celebrate in bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs across the capital. New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year – particularly in central London. So if you are heading out, it’s best to plan your travel before you head out.

Whatever you’re up to have a fantastic time and see you in 2016!
