Transport For London (Tfl) are allowing their staff to work on station platforms and at ticket barriers with nothing in place to minimise their risk of contracting Coronavirus. I know this because one of my family members works at the busiest London Underground station. Indeed Tfl haven't even met with the staff to discuss it, which is shocking to say the least. All employees have been told is to follow the advice of Public Health England. Thus Tfl are washing their hands of any responsibility, but THEY are responsible for the health and safety of their employees, not Public Health England. The reality is that they don't give a damn. The staff are working long shifts and are in contact with thousands of people at close quarters. This is a total disgrace. The hierarchy are sitting in their warm, cosy offices whilst their employees are left to get on with it. I phoned and was told that nobody was available to speak to me. Surprise surprise! I I hope that any employee who contracts the virus will take legal action against Tfl for negligence. They deserve it. They portray the image of being a caring and considerate employer but that couldn't be further from the truth.
Tfl are doing nothing and treating their staff with contempt - indeed one CSA said he felt like "Cannon fodder" - but nobody appears concerned, including Mr Khan. Two days ago I was told that Tfl had supplied latex gloves. Latex gloves offer no protection due to the fact that people touch their faces many times during a working day. Public Health England make it clear that this is the case, so Tfl aren’t even reading what they are telling their employees to read! Staff have always been treated badly by Tfl and anybody who works for them on the frontline will tell you that. This however takes their maltreatment up a gear and is putting lives at risk. Tfl must be forced to do what every employer is required to do by Law – take responsibility for the health and safety of their employees.
