I have read in the Evening Standard that plans have been put forward for a ‘left on red’ policy to be introduced allowing cyclists the ability to turn left at traffic lights when on red.
This is a ridiculous proposal with clearly little thought attached to it
Significant numbers of pedestrians often start walking when the lights are on red man but no traffic is coming. Having cyclists turning left on red risks accidents with cyclists colliding in to crossing pedestrians which will cause harm to both cyclists and pedestrians
We are supposed to be encouraging people to walk as opposed to stopping for significant lengths of time at crossings.
I also worry about the fact this will encourage cyclists to undertake stopped traffic at lights. This poses a risk that traffic will suddenly ‘go’ causing an accident with the cyclists
This is meant to be a headline grabbing publicity stunt by some individuals (for once not the mayor) to promote themselves as having dreamt up a novel idea of changing how we travel. The only headlines this will grab will be the escalation of accident numbers.
Crazy proposals with frightening potential impacts
